Till Death Do Us Part

This hot damn thriller of a story, which is set in the Napa Valley, (right away I was in —wine anyone?), is narrated in the voices of two women, Bev, (threaded throughout the year, 1999), and June, who is ensconced in the year 2022.

June and her newly minted husband, Josh, (who is Bev’s son), are away on their honeymoon when Josh goes out for an early morning swim, leaving a note for the still sleeping June that he will be back shortly. But Josh never returns —all signs point to the fact that he has drowned, even though he is a strong swimmer.  (Talk about a quick #TillDeathDoUs quickie if I’ve ever heard of one).

But then again, is that what really happened?

As June prepares to move on — ten years after Josh’s disappearance — by marrying Kyle, a partner who has been loving and understanding with her, shadowy figures begin stalking her at the most inopportune times.

To wit, she has a creeping feeling of eyes on her everywhere she goes. As such, June feels that she has no other choice but to return to Josh’s family’s Napa Valley vineyard — which Bev and his dad, David run — to suss out clues around the shadowy figure who is stalking her —and who looks just like her dead husband.

Suspicions run rampant: “I was the one with the problem, the one who refused to stop picking at suspicions.”

And oh la la.

Does Bev ever have a hidden back story —one that gallops the plot forward with delicious intrigue.

“Emilia did things to my body that I never thought possible for a body to feel, like all my nerve endings were on fire at once.”

A lot of ground, Vis a Vis intertwine-able relationships, are covered which keeps the many-balls-in-the-air-plotlines intriguing, fast-paced and unputdownable.

And the plot twists?

A couple of hundred pages in  —I’m not going to say which pages  —  no spoiler alerts  — there is another twist to the saga that left me with a “hot damn” smile on my face.

And if all of this isn’t enough, it’s kind of neat that Flynn gives her readers a chance to pause and breathe between the plot upheavals with brief one-page snippets on the making of wine, the fermentation process etc.

So pour a glass and enjoy what is a solid blister of a twister.
