THINGS I HAVE FOUND (OUT) Whilst in COVID-19 Self-Isolation: Week 3

Taffy for blog

As we settle into Week 4 of Self-Isolation, I thought it would be fun to get interactive – play a game, as well as dig into the burgeoning ‘readers’ virtual email bag and answer some of your burning questions.

Ready?

Pardon me? What’s that you’re saying? You have to run to the fridge first and grab a little somethin’ somethin’ to snack on whilst we play our first game? Alright, then, well you might as well cruise past the liquor cabinet while you’re at it and pull the cork out of that bottle you’ve been saving for a rainy day. Let’s face it folks, it may not be raining where you are, but all hell HAS broken loose, (literally) and besides, it MUST be five o’clock somewhere, n’est pas?

But just in case you’re feeling a tad guilty about it….

ProhibitionI mean if the government says it’s OK then what the heck are y’all worrying about? (Thanks to Bill the Thrill for this one)

OK Friends, without further ado, let’s play, “What’s that song.”

It’s a game where I get to ask the questions and you get to guess the answers! If you get at least 5 out of 7- you get to have another snack/drink. Anything below that and you better go for a nap….you’ve already had your fair share for the day!

So what makes this quiz different is that the lyrics are all tailored to our COVID self-isolation situation.  And whilst I’ve included the answers to the songs at the end of this tome-  s…..t…..r…..e…..t…..c…..h your memory power, peeps! Don’t peek.  Rummage around in that brain matter and see if you can pull out the title of the song for the lyrics. And I apologize in advance – a lot of the songs are from the 60s.

You know what they say about the 60s, right?

No! What do they say about the 60s, Cece?

“If you remember the sixties you weren’t really there. (Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane)

OK then…..Pass me my incense while I pluck a flower and let us begin.

What line are these songs from and who sang them:

  1. “Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare; do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there.” (Hint: He’s DEFINTIELY left the building!)
  2. “Oh a storm is threatening my very life today.”
  3. “I watched myself crawling out as I was a-crawlin’ in.”
  4. “I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought I would see you again.”
  5. “We’ve gotta get outta this place, if it’s the last thing we ever do.”
  6. “We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969.”
  7. “I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.” Hint: He’s also been known to imbibe One bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer

As an aside, (you know how I love my asides!), Did you know that Queen Lizzie’s favourite self-isolation song is:  “It’s only castles turning” (Neil Young)

Moving right along…which is to say…from the kitchen back to the library, I have an interesting tip that I gleaned from Jonathan Robinson’s new book, Coronavirus Pandemic Survival Guide 2020, (Pla-eeeeese god, don’t let there be another guide dated 2021), on actions to take around COVID. We all know now, (surely, we ALL know now!) that we need to wash our hands frequently – which means many many times every day as we count off 20 seconds each time. Well Jonathan’s tip to knowing for sure that you’ve been doing it for 20 seconds, (the ‘it’ refers to washing your hands folks, wash-ing your hands) is to sing the Happy Birthday song right through, twice.

Let me get this straight. If I am supposed to wash my hands a minimum of seven to ten times a day, and I sing Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, twice each time, by the time a week is over, I will have turned 98 years old. And that’s not including my current age.

So, let’s see…handwashing birthday song would make me 98 plus my current age of 38 equals……

Just kidding! I turned 39 on my last birthday!

Speaking of things that would make your hair curl….

One of this blog’s faithful readers sent in this very critical and earth-shattering query.

“Oh self-isolation guru, if THIS lasts any longer just WHAT are we going to do about our hair?

Cece weird hairSeriously, is my hair different?

But just before we go, (yes folks, I know, I know, it’s been ten minutes now and it’s time for another ice cube top up!), I provide you with Week 3’s Self-Isolation Fhen-omenonal Fun Food Recipe:

(Floss not included)

gummy bear popcornGummy Bear popcorn

I know, I know! It sounds weird, but it is soooo delicious-oooo.

Ingredients: Orville Redenbacher popcorn kernels, oil, and of course, the pièce de ré·sis·tance, multi-coloured gummie bears.

Get your pot out, (not that kind silly….although the GB popcorn provides an amazing and stimulating munchies option- or so I’ve been told)

Heat up vegetable oil for two minutes until it is piping hot, cover the bottom of the pot with real corn popcorn kernels- Orville is the best!) and pop yer popcorn.

Now here comes the most important part: Using a big bowl, pour about a quarter of the hot popcorn into a bowl, then, sprinkle in a handful of gummy bears.

Gummies package

Keeping doing this in subsequent layers until yer bowl is full. The gummies melt into the popcorn and  the gooey pull-away popcorn becomes a gourmet self-isolation O.

Now there are two important keys to this recipe….the popcorn has to be hot so that the gummies melt between the layers, AND, they need to be the GOOD Gummy Bears. When you’re a gummy bear aficionado like I am, wiggly (gummy) worms just won’t do. (Although that may or may not be due to the fact that I ate the last five wiggle worms whilst in-between today’s snack six and snack seven).

One must keep one’s strength up, n’est pas?

       Answers to song lyrics:

  1. Elvis Presley, Are You Lonely Tonight
  2. Rolling Stones, Gimme Shelter
  3. Kenny Rogers, I Just Dropped In (To see what condition my condition was in)
  4. James Taylor, You’ve Got A Friend
  5. The Animals, We’ve Gotta Get Outta This Place
  6. Eagles, Hotel California
  7. George Thorogood, I Drink Alone

Fun Fact: George and I share the same birthday- Hmmmmm maybe it’s true what they say about Capricorns!

As I bid you all adieu for the week, and wish you all a Hoppy Easter (and Passover), just remember….if you see a VERY LARGE, white, big-eared mammal outside of your window Saturday night…..refer back to song #7.

And hey, if I see him…I will say hello to his friend, the Pink Elephant, for you!
